Yalda Night (Shab-e Yalda or Shab-e Chelleh) is the Persian celebration of the winter solstice, held on the longest night of the year, around December 20 or 21. Families gather, eat together, recite poetry (often by Hafez) and stay up late. This guide explains the traditions and gives you a complete menu with recipes.
Yalda traditions
- Gathering of family and friends, often at the home of the oldest relative.
- Poetry: reading from the Divan of Hafez and fortune-telling with it (fal-e Hafez).
- Symbolic foods: red pomegranates and watermelon, whose color represents the dawn and the warmth of life, plus nuts, dried fruits and sweets.
- Staying awake until the sun rises, to welcome the return of longer days.
Why the longest night matters
The name Yalda is usually linked to an old word for “birth”, and Shab-e Chelleh means “night of forty”, the start of the forty hardest days of winter. In a farming culture the longest night was a time to store food, share it and wait together for the light to return. That is why the table is built from things that keep: nuts, dried fruit, pomegranates and watermelon stored from summer.
Tips for the fruit
- Choose pomegranates that feel heavy for their size with firm, slightly shiny skin.
- Cut watermelon just before serving and keep the cut pieces cold.
- Roast raw nuts lightly in a dry pan or the oven for a deeper flavor, and let them cool before serving.
- Set out small bowls and spoons so guests can help themselves.
