Nutrition Facts Label: A Healthy Food Guide for Adults

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a tool called the “Nutrition Facts Label” printed on all packaged foods and beverages to help people make healthy food choices. This label provides essential information about the nutritional content of products.

The label specifies the serving size and the number of servings in each package. An important note is that if you consume twice the serving size, you will receive double the calories and nutrients. The calories listed are usually calculated based on a 2,000-calorie daily diet, but individual caloric needs vary.

Adults should pay special attention to certain nutrients. Dietary fiber, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium are among the nutrients that should be consumed more. These substances are essential for bone health, muscular and nervous system function, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

On the other hand, saturated fats, sodium, and added sugars are substances that should be limited. Excessive consumption of these substances can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney problems. This is particularly important for older adults, as blood pressure typically rises with age.
