With Halloween just two weeks away, a big bowl of something green and bubbling is the easiest way to make a party table feel special. This Witch’s Brew Punch is kid-friendly, colored naturally with kiwi instead of food dye, and takes ten minutes to mix. It suits school parties, trick-or-treat nights at home and any gathering where you want a festive drink that is not just soda.

Why it works

Pineapple juice gives sweetness and a natural foam when poured, kiwi brings the bright green color and a little fiber, and lime keeps the whole thing from tasting flat. Ginger ale added at the last moment gives the “bubbling cauldron” effect. If you prefer less sugar, replace half of the ginger ale with plain sparkling water.

Tips for a better brew

  • Strain the kiwi puree. The tiny black seeds look like specks of dirt in the punch; a fine sieve gives a clean, glowing green.
  • Chill everything. Cold juices keep the bubbles alive longer and avoid diluting the punch with melted ice.
  • Add the fizz last. Pour the ginger ale in right before serving, not earlier than 15 minutes ahead.
  • Use big ice. One large block, or ice cubes frozen from some of the punch itself, melts slowly and does not water it down.

Fun variations

  • Eyeball garnish: stuff a canned lychee with a single blueberry and float a few on top.
  • Foamy cauldron: drop a scoop of lime sorbet into each glass before pouring.
  • Spooky setting: place the bowl on a dark cloth with fake cobwebs and a few candles instead of dry ice, which is not safe around children.
  • Less sweet: use unsweetened pineapple juice and skip the honey.

Serving ideas and a simple party menu

Pair the punch with Halloween spiderweb brownies, a plate of mummy sausage rolls, a bowl of popcorn and a tray of cut fruit “skeleton” platters. Serve in clear glasses so the color shows, and rim them with a little sugar if you like.

Storage

Mix the juice base (without ginger ale) up to a day ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator; stir before serving. Leftover punch with ginger ale loses its fizz but still tastes good over ice the next day. Do not leave the punch at room temperature for more than two hours at a party.

Note: small garnishes such as whole lychees with blueberries are a choking risk for young children, so cut them up or leave them off for toddlers.

Method

  1. Blend the peeled kiwis until smooth and press the puree through a fine sieve to remove the seeds.

  2. In a large pitcher or punch bowl, stir together the kiwi puree, pineapple juice, lime juice and honey until the honey dissolves. Chill for at least 30 minutes.

  3. Just before serving, pour in the cold ginger ale and stir gently once.

  4. Add a scoop of lime sorbet to each glass if using, ladle in the punch and top with a lychee eyeball.

Tips

  • Pour the ginger ale in at the last moment so the punch stays fizzy.
  • Freeze some of the punch in an ice tray to keep it cold without diluting it.
  • Leave out the whole lychee garnish for toddlers.
